Snow Play In Frazier Park CA

There is still snow in Frazier Park California.

For snow play in Frazier Park California, exit Frazier Mountain Park off the I 5 freeway and go west.  Frazier Park is 3 miles west of I 5 freeway.  The best way to tell when you are in Frazier Park is when you get to the second four way stop that has a blinking red light.  The cross street, at the blinking red light, is Monterey Trail.

The first place for snow play in Frazier Park California is at the second stop sign off the freeway at the Park in Frazier Park.  The snow there is a bit low right now and will be melted soon if it doesn't snow again.

The second place for snow play, in Frazier Park California, is not necessarily in Frazier Park.  It is about 5 miles past Frazier Park on the left side of the main road.  It is a small hill that everyone goes sledding on in the Las Padres National Forest.

The third place for snow play, in Frazier Park California, is about 14 miles past Frazier Park.  When you come to the fork in the road, you make a left, and that will bring you up to Mt. Pinos Recreation Area.  At the very top, there is excellent sledding and snow play.

There are several other places to play in the snow, in Frazier Park California, on the way up to Mt. Pinos Recreation Area, that you will see on the way just make sure not to park in the road or CHP will get you.

As far as snow chains are concerned, you won't need any the first five or ten miles.  It is very wise to bring snow chains along.  If you have a 4X4 vehicle, you will be much safer.

See you in Frazier Park for snow play!!!

Thanks for commenting on my blog. I get approximately 50 visitors a day and no one ever comments.

  3. Twice in the past 2 years we've driven to FP from Pasadena only to find that the road just beyond town is closed due to ice; the last time was two weeks ago on Saturday. We drive a land Rover but had no chains...is that a common problem-road closure to non residents?
It's frustrating as there's nowhere we knew of that would let us know head of time...I feel certain we weren't able to get as far as this hillside you mention(sounds great!). I really wish we could manage to drive further west next time-perhaps this coming Sunday(2/7).

Thanks for doing the web page!

  4. Hi Jenny,

Right after a big snow the CHP get overwhelmed due to the city folk driving like they are on dry So Cal roads.

For example, the first weekend after the last good snow, we had a car overturn on our second bridge. Right before every bridge it states to watch for ice. What the sign doesn't tell you is that it is black ice, and you can't see it.

Just moments later, we had a 4 car pile up because a truck was going too fast and the back end is very light so he did a couple 360's and the cars behind, following too close for icy roads, crashed into each other.

Thus, CHP would probably rather close the roads than respond to the traffic collisions. That is my theory and since I see it every year, I would put money on it.

Next time you come up, right after a good snow, exit Gorman, turn left, and then turn right, after the McDonalds. On the left, before Frazier Mountain Park Road, you will see small hills you sled down. Everyone does it. This way you will bypass the CHP closure.

Right after a good snow there is lots of virgin powder snow.

Watch for my posts and I will try to let everyone know, best as I can, about road closures and chains required.

We love having you all come visit. It is fun and it brings our little village revenue.

Thanks for the comment and have a great weekend.

  5. Thanks Elizabeth!
I really appreciate your advice, and that you keep updating the blog(FYI I found it doing a Google search for "How to play in the snow in Frazier Park").

I do get what you're saying. I'm a native Californian who's lived in a few other places where one gets *real* weather, so I take icy road conditions very seriously-I can only cringe thinking of what happens with those totally unaware L.A.-area drivers up there.

We'll come up again soon. I love the ambiance of FP and feel like I'm a thousand miles away up there-I envy you the surroundings.

    Thanks again for your reply!

  7. Thank you so much for the info Jenny! I watch the FP webcams frequently to check snow conditions, and the info about where to go for snow play is great! I'm thinking of bringing my family up Monday for some time in the snow, though I heard it's supposed to warm up. Hope the snow is still there on Monday! :)

  8. Hey Samantha,

The snow will still be here on Monday you may just have to drive further. There will be snow here for quite a few more weeks.

If there isn't snow in Frazier Park, there will be snow up at Mt Pinos Recreation Area, the third place for snow play on this post.

I update the blog usually on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And in between, if I have time or we have new snow.

    Have fun in the snow...

  9. Thanks so much for blogging on the snow up there. I'm planning on bringing some of our church kids to have some snow fun this weekend (we're coming from Camarillo). Any word on whether there'll be snow this Saturday? My hope is to go to the place you talked about up the road from McDonald's. Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Hey there Jeff,

You are welcome and thank you for commenting. There is snow up here in the hills but, unfortunately, none by the McDonalds.

Your best bet is to exit Frazier Mountain Park Rd, off the I5, and go west.

You will go about 12 to 13 miles before you hit a place to play.

There will be a fork in the road and you will want to go left. This will take you to Mt Pinos Recreation Area. You will see plenty of snow but the best will be at the top. This will be approximately 19 miles west of the exit.

You may find several places in between that are suitable.

    Enjoy...

  11. It is Feb 24th, is there still sleddable snow there?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hello Mom of 5,

There is plenty of sleddable snow up in the Mt Pinos Recreation area. It snowed on Monday and has been raining on and off. If you go to the top of Mt Pinos Recreation area and just follow one of the trails off the parking lot, you will find some seriously fun snow.

What day do you plan on coming? We may get some more snow this week, especially Friday, they say. If it snows you may not be able to get up here.

I will post a weekend post to update everyone.

    Elizabeth

  13. Thank you so much! Friday is the day that I was thinking of driving up from Agoura Hills. We have never been up there, but my kids are dying to sled in CA. Do you think I would be better off waiting? I just don’t want to miss the snow season by waiting too long like we did last year.

  14. Hi Mom of 5,

Looks like clouds with possible rain for tomorrow. I will try to post the weather first thing in the morning.

We are suppose to have snow for sure on Saturday. Weather forecasts are not very accurate when it comes to up here.

It should be fine tomorrow as long as it doesn't snow or rain. If it rains in the lower levels it will be snowing on Mt Pinos recreation area and they may close the road.

    Have a great time...

  15. Hello Elizabeth. I am planning to head to Frazier Park tomorrow morning (Sat 2/27/10) I know it supposed to start raining here in North Hills (snowing up there, I assume) would it be wise for me to take my family up to FP tomorrow in the morning. I drive a Chevy Tahoe and I do not own chains. I just want to find some nice snow and have my kids play in it.. Thanks for any info you can provide

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi Miguel,

The best I can tell you is that I will post conditions early tomorrow morning. I usually get up around 6 a.m. If it is snowing, at all, I will post as soon as possible.

They say that there is 100% chance of snow tomorrow and up to 6 inches. When they predict the weather for Frazier Park they are not very accurate.

Most of the time they seem wrong but if they are right, we do have snow, and 6 inches, the road conditions will not be good for your Tahoe without chains or snow tires. If you do not have a 4X4 you can easily get stuck and slide off the road.

    Hope this helps.

  20. HI! Very good Blog, thanks!

Just curious if we(myself and a couple of families with preschool aged kids) should do our Snow Play Day coming up on the 14th should try the drive from Apache Saddle Station up Cerro N. road OR do we try Mt Pinos road to the main XSki park n play area???? We want a low key area for some simple sledding and snowman making for the little kids.. need permit? Any ATV riding at those two areas?
    Thank you!!!!!!!!

  21. Hi pinnkid,

It is suppose to snow this week but the forecasters have been wrong a lot lately. They promise us snow and we get very little or none.

So, chances are, there won't be any snow on Cerro Noroeste Rd. If there is, that will be the best place. There are much less people and yes there is ATV riding.

It is the Los Padres National Forest so you always need a pass. Mr. Ranger is always up at Mt. Pinos on the weekends to check but I have never seen him on Cerro Nor Rd.

If you really want snow you will probably have to hit Mt Pinos Recreation area.

Check out my updates to see how well we do this week. Hopefully, we do great with the snow.

We did get some last week and it put about another foot on Mt Pinos. Cerro Nor is all melted.

    I hope that helps...

Enjoy your day in the snow.

  22. Wow Elizabeth you are great! Thanks for all the useful info. My 3 year old can't wait to play in the snow and I think we will be making a trip out to lovely Frazier Park this week. My uncle lives out there too so he'd love the visit. Thanks again for your posts :)

  23. Astineh,

You are so lucky to come up this week. We got snow on Sunday and today so you should have a great time! They say it will snow in another 5 days or so.

Most of the snow has melted but there is plenty at the recreation area around Mount Pinos.

I hope you have a great snow day in Frazier Park.

The roads are pretty clear so if you don't have snow chains or a 4X4 you should be fine since the skies are suppose to be clear for the next 5 days.

  24. Thank you so much for all your helpful posts! Is there still snow in Frazier Park? I wanted to bring my kids up Friday, March 12th.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for your updates. We will be bringing pre-schoolers to Frazier Park for snow play this Saturday, the 13th. Is our best bet Mt. Pinos Recreation area? If so, is there an actual address of it so I can get directions from my gps. Is it still good for sled? Where can I get sleds? I apologize for these rudimentary questions, I never went sledding before, being an LA native. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Anon,

Great questions! You can get a sled for really cheap at Wal Mart, Big 5, or any stores like that. It will be cheaper and you can buy more of them, LOL! Just give'm a call to see if they still have sleds available.

If not, there are stores up here that sell'em, they might be on the expensive side.

Your best place to sled is Mt Pinos Recreation Area. I do not think there is an address, sorry. There is a ton of snow up there and you will love it!

If you exit Frazier Mountain Park Road, off the I 5, you will go west approximately 12 to 13 miles, there will be a fork in the road, veer to the left, and there will be plenty of signs that say 'Mt Pinos Recreation Area', don't worry

If you veer right, you will end up wasting a lot of gas and miles. There isn't anywhere to play in the snow because it is mostly private property.

Just after the fork in the road, there is several places on the right side of the road to sled. I would say about less than one mile there is Mc Gill Trail, about 2 miles there is another area, and about 4 miles as well.

You have to get there early or you may have to go to the top, which is not very far from the fork just lots of curves, he he. On the way to the top, there is very little parking. You cannot park on the road, you have to park in the little inlets.

The top has a lot of snow. I was just up there today. Look for my next post and you will see the pictures.

Have a great day! You will love it! And so will the kids!

  28. Thanks for all the updates for us lowlanders. Well we still haven't made it up there. I am hoping to come tomorrow (Friday Mar. 19th) with the kids. Is there still any snow left up there with the warm spell this week? Thanks so much!

  29. Hi momof5,

I keep missing your comment by a day. Sorry!

There will be snow at the top for some time. Check out my recent post and you will see pictures of how much snow there was last week.

I will try to post updated pic's but, at the very very top of Mt. Pinos, there will probably be snow into May, possibly June. You will just have to hike for a bit and the kids would probably love it.

Let me know if you went...

I hate to be the one to give bad news but we have been getting nothing but rain. I don't understand it. When it rains down below (LA OR BAKERSFIELD) we get snow but I haven't had the opportunity to break out the snow shoes yet.

Did you visit Frazier Park? If so, how was your visit?

  36. Hello,

Do you think there will be any snow this Sat Jan 1st or Sun Jan 2nd? ...What's the best place to go for smaller children for light sledding/snowplay? ....Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hello Anon,

Yes, I do think there will be snow on Sat Jan 1st and Sun Jan 2nd. The best place to bring smaller children for light sledding/snow play would be at the top of Mt Pinos Recreation Area.

In order to get there, off the I5, go west on Frazier Mtn Park Road for about 13 miles, there will be a fork in the road and you will want to veer left. Follow that way up to the top.

The reason this is the best for children is because it has a parking lot and plenty of places to play. On your way up, you may see a good spot you feel comfortable with and stop to play.

    Have a great time.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thank you so much for doing this, you are a great help to us...we are coming up there this Saturday with the kids...are they still requiring chains/4wd/snow tires?

    Leslie

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hi Leslie,

As of now, they are not requiring chains/4WD/snow tires, up to a certain point. Meaning, you can drive up here and find a place to play in the snow without snow chains BUT... If you are going to travel beyond a certain point, say like the fork in the road, that is approximately 20 miles west of the I5 freeway, CHP may require you to have chains.

    That is just my disclaimer...

If you come up without chains, you will be fine to find a place to play in the snow before they require chains.

  49. Hello. I see that it is going to snow this weekend in Frazier Park. We are not a snow-loving family (meaning we don't have equipment like tubes) but would like to take the day to play/maybe sled. Is it possible to rent equipment and get to a spot to sled without a major outlay of dough?

  50. Hi Anon,

I am not aware of any place that rents up here but you can buy for cheap at any sporting goods place if they have anything left.

Plastic sleds are pretty cheap and I have seen people buy those pool rafts, lol, and sleigh on them.

    Have fun!

  56. Hi Susana!

Snow lasts usually until May and sometimes June, at the top of the Mountain. It's suppose to snow this weekend so we should have plenty of snow for you on March 6 but check the updates.

The only time they require chains is right after the snow, when it is real snowy, cold, and icy, and sometimes when you go deep into the abyss of elevation ;)

Keep an eye on the updated posts because I update the road conditions.

Did you love the Sequoias? I ride my motorcycle through there and am just amazed at the beauty.

When you come up, head on up towards Mt. Pinos Recreation Area, just pick a spot that you like, and have a great time.

As far as rules, he he he, I do not know if the Forestry has them when it comes to dogs. They have never said anything to me, probably because they are dog lovers too.

  62. so as I was google-mapping my route to go to Mt. Pinos, the map switched my route from Thousand Oaks, CA and routed me through Ojai, coming up the 101fwy to the 33fwy because I guess Lockwood Valley Rd. comes in from both directions. Have you ever been all the way through there? Do you have an opinion wether to come the 101fwy to the 5fwy north, vs. coming up through Ojai? I've never heard of anyone doing this, but I am an admitted newbie to snow in CA.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Hi Mom of 5,

I ride my motorcycle through that way all the time. Very windy (whine dee) roads! Beautiful though! It will probably take you twice as long.

So, if you would like the scenery, go for it, but if you don't want to take too long take the fwy's.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Are you sure Elizabeth? We were there on Wed. (top of Mt. Pinos) and it was melting fast. We had a hard time finding and then reaching a spot -had to jump a stream and got wet - and there was only patchy snow even on the other side. It rained while we were there which made a visable difference in the melted snow by the time we left . Also we've had 2 really warm days since then. I don't want to be a party pooper but . . .

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thanks Mom of 5, I appreciate the comments, always. When you say top of Mt. Pinos, are you talking about the parking lot or did you actually go to the top? The top is over a 2 mile hike from the parking lot.

There is always snow at the top until April or May but you gotta hike to get to it.

But if there isn't any at the top then, uh-oh!

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  71. oh, I guess maybe we weren't all the way at the top then. We turned around when we felt like we had started to go down hill again, but we never hit a parking lot. I didn't realize it was a 2 mile hike from the lot though. I don't think we would have made that with the kids, lol!

  92. Am not in Frazier Park this weekend but as far as I know it was still snowing an hour ago and some of my friends cannot get out, so I am guessing no one can get in. ;0) You can call the CHP road conditions and they will tell if any roads are closed. Good luck with your snow play in Frazier Park.

  94. Hello! great blog btw, I was wondering if you could let me know if there is usually a good amount of powder up on Mt.Pinos towards the new year and early Jan? also if there is camping up there...
    thank you very much-Victor

  95. Hi. I was also wondering if there is losts of snow right now. We are planing to go this weekend or at least for Christmas day! Thanks

  96. Hello Anons...

There is little snow on the ground at high elevations. The sun is out and therefore, it will probably melt soon.

As far as snow at the top of Mount Pinos, I am unsure.

Victor...there sometimes is snow towards the new year and early January. Usually, the snow fall is best in January and February. There is camping up in Mt Pinos but if there is a big snow they close the snow gates so it is hard to get up there.

The camp ground is called the McGill campground and is often closed when there is snow. I am not sure what the rules are with the forestry. You can probably call the Los Padres National Forest Camp/Office up there.

    Hope that helps you all...

  100. Hello Elizabeth, we're planning on taking a day trip to Frazier Park tomorrow but are not sure how far up we must drive to have enough snow play. We've never really drove on snow before so we're a bit nervous. We have a group of kids ranging from ages 2-10, is there an area you would recommend for us?

    ReplyDelete
  101. May I please get your thoughts on coming up there tomorrow, 12/30?? Will there be places to play/tube??

  102. Hi Elizabeth! Thank you so much for helping out. We are planning on driving up mt. Pinos a bit to play in the snow today. Do you think there's enough to play in and can we get up there without chains? Thanks and happy new year!

  104. Dear Anons, and PJYield,

I hope you all came up and enjoyed the snow, I was on holiday, which means no emails, and that is how I receive the comments.

There is plenty of snow play in Frazier Park. Actually, at higher elevations now. The snow is good and the road conditions are excellent in Frazier Park and on the I5.

  106. Dear Anon,

The weather says sunny, but I am sure there will be snow at the top of Mt Pinos.

  107. Thank you so much for the great info! We drove past the hill you spoke of for the sledders and parked just off the road in front of a Nat'l park sign. It was a great area, not crowded, in fact we were the only family there for a while. We had a lot of fun, it was our first time we have three kids 10, 7 and 5. We will definitely be back! Is there a good place to stop and have a meal and some beers on our way home?

  108. Hi Elizabeth,

we lived in Castaic for 12 years and finally we're coming to frazier park for some snow fun LOL. Did it snow last night? What's the best spot to hit today? Do we need chains?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Hi Jen,

You are welcome. I am so glad you enjoyed your snow play in Frazier Park. There is a yummy Mexican Restaurant near the I5 freeway. Just drive like you are going to the Jack in the Box, and you will see it. Yummy yummy tamales ;)

  110. Alice, it is crazy that you are so close to Frazier Park and are finally going after 12 years, lol. I hope you had fun, and found a place to play in the snow. Although chains are rarely required, it is a great idea to bring them all the time.

  111. Hello Elizabeth

I came across your blog recently and have been following it for the past couple of weeks. I would like to try out Frazier Park (have been living in LA for over twenty years, but never been up there ... how sad, lol).

It just rained last night, was wondering if there was any snow activity up there, and if there was ... do you think it will be there until Sunday?

Looking forward to hearing back from you, thank you in advance ... Khan

  112. Hi Elizabeth! thank you for keeping this blog response going :) It's been a few years but i'm back on here asking if there's a chance for snow this weekend. I heard the Grapevine closed tonight so I'm hopeful... think it'll stick through the weekend? Have a great night!

  113. Hi Wrathof Khan (LOL)

It snowed last night, and there will be plenty of snow still at the top of Mt Pinos, I am sure, for Sunday. You are welcome, and welcome to my blog ;)

  114. My family is also headed this way tomorrow for some snow play... After the craziness last night, will chains be needed for this weekend (Sat)? Thanks in advance!

  115. Thank you Elizabeth for your reply!

"Wrath of Khan" ... well, my last name happens to be Khan. I am not a Trekkie, but I did like the movie, hence my screen name :)

I just hope none of the roads are closed/blocked off this weekend, keeping my fingers crossed.

    cheers, Khan

  116. Hi Elizabeth
We are coming to Pine Mountain Club next weekend (1/18/13-1/21/13). Any idea what kind of snow we can expect to find for sledding? I see it may warm up by the end of next week.

    Thank you!

  117. Hi Jill,

Hope you had a great time! I say, always bring chains because if the snow begins to melt, in order to find more, one must travel further up the mountain to Mt Pinos, and sometimes they require chains. So, it's just a good idea to bring them. It would be a bummer for anyone to get up to Frazier Park for snow, and then have to turn around if they require chains.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Hey Wrathof Khan, lol, love it. Did you make it up to Frazier Park for the snow? I hope you had a great time!!!

  119. Hi GuateMaMa,

It is really hard to tell because if the sun shines, the snow melts. It is suppose to be mostly sunny all week. Although, if you do not find snow up in Pine Mountain Club, there is sure to be some snow up at the top of Mt. Pinos, which is very near.

I am sure you will have a blast, and I hope you have plenty of snow for your visit!

  120. hello,
thanks for your helpful blog post! do you know if there will be enough snow this weekend to go tubing? i plan on bringing my 2 year old to play in the snow for the first time and wanted to find out before i make the trek out there. thanks!!

  121. Hi Anon,

There should be plenty of snow to go tubing at the top of Mt Pinos ;)

  122. Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks a lot for all the valuable information you are giving to us. Couple of more to go:)

Q1- What is the exact address(including zip code) of the Frazier park which we can enter in GPS to come over there.I hope to get some snow at frazier park.

Q2- If we don't find snow at there, then do we need to go to Mt Pinos to play in snow?

Q3- For frazier park also do we need to buy adventure pass or only if we are going to Mt pinos?

    Thanks in advance

    ReplyDelete
  123. Hi Anon...

I would Google the Post Office's address, and the zip is 93225. Mt Pinos is the place for snow, and I heard you do not need an Adventure Pass this weekend due to MLK Holiday. But, I do not believe Frazier Park requires an adventure pass when you go for snow play, when there is snow.

    You are welcome, and enjoy...

  124. Would there be snow tomorrow Saturday at M. Pinos?
Does it require snow chains to get to the mountain?
Thank you I appreciate your info

    ReplyDelete
  125. There is snow at the top of Mt. Pinos. About the chains... There are signs that say chains may be required at any time. The forecast states it is going to rain in Frazier Park, which usually means snow. Therefore, if it snows today and tomorrow, it is a very high probability you will need chains on this coming Saturday the 26th.
